The New York Giants have a decision to make about Daniel Jones, and they can’t afford to wait for too long.
They declined Jones’ fifth-year option last offseason, making him eligible for free agency at the end of last season.
Fast forward to today, and the Duke product is reportedly looking for a deal that’s worth up to $45 million per year, and he went as far as to switch representation agencies to try and get it done.
Needless to say, Jones’ market value is nowhere near that steep price, and the Giants would make a terrible mistake by agreeing to such terms.
That led to speculation about the team potentially placing him under the franchise tag, which would pay him more than $10 million less than his reported asking price.
Now, however, it seems like both parties could avoid that scenario, as Giants GM Joe Schoen recently told Good Morning Football that the meetings with Jones’ new agents have been quite positive, adding that they could get a deal done before the deadline to place him under the tag:
“Things ramped up pretty quick with his new group and we’ve had productive talks throughout this week. We met Monday, Tuesday, we met yesterday with them, and we’ll continue to talk and see if we can get something done before Tuesday,” Schoen said.

Danny Dimes is coming off a somewhat solid season, breaking out under Brian Daboll and showing flashes of potential for the first time in his career.
The Giants would be wise to keep him around and continue to try and develop his skills, but he has no business asking the same amount of money that Patrick Mahomes gets every year.
In the end, Jones might want to revisit his asking price to get a deal done.
Otherwise, he risks getting tagged and giving up guaranteed money in the long run.
