The New York Giants might be without their best offensive weapon for the future.

Saquon Barkley’s camp and the organization have reportedly reached an impasse, and they might as well allow him to test free agency and walk out the door next season.

Barkley is reportedly looking to sign a deal worth at least $12.5 million, which is way more than the Giants are willing to pay him.

Moreover, NFL insider Dov Kleiman reports that they have ‘no intention’ of paying him the franchise tag, either, which would cost them roughly over $10 million.

There is still a “gap” in negotiations between the team and Barkley, per @nypost

This never seemed like a realistic possibility a couple of years ago.

Barkley was wreaking havoc out of the backfield and made a strong case for being considered the best running back in the league week in and week out.

But being available is a huge part of the job, and Barkley has missed plenty of time with significant injuries throughout his brief career in the league.

In fact, even he admitted that all the injuries had taken a toll on his market value, especially considering how expendable running backs have become in today’s pass-happy game.

The Giants are right to be worried about Barkley’s durability, albeit he’s coming off a solid season and could be a huge difference-maker when healthy.

But this is just another example of how ruthless this game can be, as Barkley might have a tough time finding actual value in free agency if he cannot even get his own team to meet his financial demands.
