The New York Jets have plenty of reasons to be hopeful about the immediate future, as they possess both the Offensive Rookie of the Year in wide receiver Garrett Wilson and the Defensive Rookie of the Year in star cornerback Sauce Gardner.

However, they badly need a good quarterback, and it looks like they will be willing to do what’s needed to acquire one.

Such speculation has centered around two veteran QBs in particular: Derek Carr and Aaron Rodgers.

In addition, New York is reportedly open to bringing back Geno Smith, according to NFL insider Albert Breer.

.@AlbertBreer just dropped a ton of interesting #Jets nuggets:

– They told Derek Carr they’ll be monitoring QB market + specifically checking on Aaron Rodgers

– DC won’t get $35M per year (it’ll be less)

– NYJ open to Geno Smith reunion or even luring Daniel Jones over?! pic.twitter.com/GcSd9EvVMY

The Jets took Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and he was a full-time starter during his first two seasons in the league.

But during that time, he threw more interceptions than touchdown passes, and people doubted if he deserved to be the Jets’ starter over the long term.

Afterward, he struggled with injuries such as a fractured jaw and a torn ACL, and he bounced around the league, playing for three teams in four seasons starting in 2017.

Smith arrived with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 as Russell Wilson’s backup, and after not playing at all that season, he appeared in five games the next two years, which included three starts in 2021 when Wilson was out with a finger injury.

Just when it looked like Smith was doomed to a fate of being an obscure backup QB, he was named Seattle’s starter this season after Wilson was traded, and he performed admirably while leading the team to the playoffs and being named to the Pro Bowl.

He is 32 years of age, so he wouldn’t be a long-term solution for the Jets, but if they’re able to sign him as a free agent, perhaps he could be a bridge to their QB of the future.
