Everybody around the NFL expected Russell Wilson to raise the Denver Broncos’ ceiling almost immediately.
Instead, he mostly held them back, struggling to find the open guy, failing to extend plays, and making some head-scratching decisions in the red zone.
Some started wondering whether Wilson had always been a product of Pete Carroll or whether he was entering the decline of his career.
Others thought it was mostly due to Nathaniel Hackett’s play-calling, but we never got some actual clarity.
A couple of weeks ago, former NFL QB Ryan Leaf shed some light on what could’ve gone wrong with Wilson.
Leaf stated that Russ had been dealing with a lot, as his mental health coach and lifelong friend Trevor Moawad had recently passed away.
Notably, Leaf was the first — and only — person to talk about this, most likely because he was also close friends with Moawad.
That’s why Dan Patrick asked him to share a little more information on this subject.

Leaf went on to tell the story of how Russ met Moawad before he declared for the NFL Draft.
Per Leaf, Russ instantly bought into Moawad’s work on cognitive science, and he worked closely with him throughout his entire career.
So, not only was his absence a massive blow for Wilson from a professional standpoint but also from a personal stance.
Moawad had become one of Wilson’s inner-circle members, and he could’ve been crucial to helping him in his transition to a new team, new city, and new organization.
