The New England Patriots thought they finally had their guy when they drafted Mac Jones.
Jones was impressive in his rookie campaign, looking poised, in control, and showing a remarkable work ethic.
But he vastly regressed in his sophomore season, and while some of that could be credited to Josh McDaniels’ departure, his lack of development was also somewhat worrisome.
Some now doubt whether Jones is the right guy to lead the franchise back to the top, as he looked quite unimpressive more often than not.
Now, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported that Bill Belichick and the Patriots aren’t completely sold on Jones either, adding that Josh McDaniels could try and lure him to Las Vegas.
Breer stated that there’s no reason to believe that’s going to happen but explained how the Pats don’t think there’s that much of a gap between Jones and backup Bailey Zappe, adding that Belichick didn’t like how Jones handled some stuff last season:
“I don’t think that head coach Bill Belichick appreciated the way Mac handled some stuff last year,” Breer said on WBZ-FM. “I think they would consider [trading Jones].”

Zappe balled out and even benched Jones during a game last season, although the first-round pick was never in actual jeopardy of losing his job.
Still, the Pats turned back to Bill O’Brien to serve as their offensive coordinator, and he’s already familiar with Jones from their brief time together at Alabama, so one can only believe that they’re looking to build around their young QB.
Then again, if Belichick wanted to trade Tom Brady, who’s to say that he won’t pull the plug on Jones in the blink of an eye?
