NFL Insider Notes 7 Packers Players That Will Be Upcoming Free Agents

The NFL offseason tends to make certain things come to light.

One of which is deciding which players an organization is willing to take a gamble on, extending their contract for another season.

However, teams do have an option to let players’ contracts expire, causing them to be free agents, exploring employment elsewhere.

This was the case for the Green Bay Packers yesterday, as they allowed seven contracts to be voided.

On Monday, 7 #Packers players: TE Robert Tonyan, Safety Adrian Amos, WR Randall Cobb, Kicker Mason Crosby, TE Marcedes Lewis, DE Dean Lowry, and DL Jarran Reed had their contracts voided, per @corryjoel

All seven of these players are staples of the organization, even though their play on the field isn’t necessarily as elite as it once was.

Take Randall Cobb, for instance.

Cobb is 32 years old and is coming off a season with 34 receptions for 427 yards and one touchdown.

While Cobb was brought back to the Packers to appease Aaron Rodgers, there is a chance that Rodgers will not be playing for the Packers in 2022.

By voiding Cobb’s contract, the team can take a chance on a younger receiver, either in free agency or in the upcoming draft.

Robert Tonyan is another great example of a player that, although well-liked within the organization, is likely on the way out the door, especially if Rodgers will not be lining up under center next season.

Tonyan had a career year in 2020, scoring 11 touchdowns, and was a consistent red zone threat for Rodgers that season.

However, due to injuries and a lack of targets, Tonyan has been quiet for the past two seasons.

For the Packers, it might be time to move on to a young tight end.

The incoming draft class of tight ends comes with high regard, and perhaps, the Packers will take a chance on one of them.
