NFL Analyst Says 1 Role Would Make Sense For Matt Patricia

Matt Patricia had a year to forget with the New England Patriots.

It’s evident that he’s not at his best when it comes to orchestrating an offense, and his play-calling led to several eye-rolls and tantrums from Mac Jones throughout the season.

But as bad as he is in the offense, he most definitely makes up for it with this defensive expertise.

That’s why even though he didn’t land the Defensive Coordinator job with the Denver Broncos, Head Coach Sean Payton still left the door open for him to join his coaching staff in a different position.

With that in mind, NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared his thoughts on his potential fit at Mile High, stating that it wouldn’t be shocking to see him serve as one of Payton’s top-tier assistants:

“Matt Patricia was a very, very good defensive coach for a very long time,” Rapoport said on NFL Network. “For me, it would make sense to bring him as a senior defensive assistant, associate Head Coach, something in that role kind of over the top, taking a look at the defense from maybe a little further out than Vance Joseph, that would make some sense.”

Patricia has been around the league for nearly two decades now, and he’s been a defensive play-caller since 2010.

He served as Bill Belichick’s Defensive Coordinator from 2012 to 2017 before trying his luck as the HC of the Detroit Lions, later returning to Foxboro after that failed stint.

Patricia was in charge of the Pats offense in 2022, but Bill O’Brien’s hiring makes him kind of expendable at this point, at least when it comes to that position, all but leaving him wandering as an intriguing hire for multiple teams.

However, despite his expertise, no other team besides the Broncos has shown any sort of interest in his services, which is all the more reason to think he’ll end up in Colorado.
