Giants GM Comments On Saquon Barkley Negotiations

The New York Giants have a big offseason ahead of them.

They are one of the few teams that have to re-sign both their quarterback and running back.

Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley are both set to become unrestricted free agents.

That is assuming the Giants do not get a deal done with them before free agency begins.

New York is coming off a surprising year in which they made the NFC Divisional round.

But, due to the unforeseen success, the Giants now find themselves in a precarious position.

What should they do with the contract of Jones and Barkley?

Barkley is one of the top running backs in the NFL, but paying running backs never seems like a good idea.

They have the shortest shelf life in the NFL, and their play usually falls off into their second contract.

Giants General Manager Joe Schoen seems to have a plan in place for what he wants to do with Barkley.

“You have to draw a line in the sand like, ‘we’re not going any further, and if he goes past this, let’s shift to plan B.’ Hopefully, we don’t get to that.”

This is not a ringing endorsement of how negotiations have been going between the two sides.

New York already lacks weapons on offense, and losing Barkley would be a tough blow.

But, they must decide if they are willing to pay Barkley top dollar or use his money towards a different position.

Adding some wide receivers for Jones to throw to would be another great way to use that money.

If they are serious about making him their franchise quarterback, he needs more weapons.

It will be interesting to see which way the Giants go in negotiations with both of these players.
