Coming off an abysmal loss in the Wild Card round of the playoffs in which they blew a 27-0 lead, the Los Angeles Chargers have faced lots of criticism when it has come to their coaching staff.

Many fans wanted them to fire Brandon Staley, their 40-year-old head coach, but he remains in that role, at least for now.

Instead, the Chargers fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and replaced him with Kellen Moore, who had done a nice job as the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive coordinator over the last four years.

Los Angeles has now also made a change at defensive coordinator by promoting Derrick Ansley to that role, and star safety Derwin James is happy about the decision.

Ansley has spent the last two seasons as the team’s defensive backs coach, and before that, he held that role for the Oakland Raiders and several college football teams.

For all the attention and criticism centered around the Chargers’ anemic offense, their defense is at least as much of a problem, as they finished 20th in total yards allowed and 21st in points given up.

Last offseason, they aggressively tried to upgrade on that side of the football by acquiring star pass rusher Kahlil Mack, cornerback J.C. Jackson, and defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day.

Although Mack did very well and made it to the Pro Bowl, Jackson played in just five games due to injury and was a big disappointment in general.

Los Angeles certainly has the talent to be very competitive in the playoffs, but have multiple holes to shore up, and Ansley will be tasked with greatly fortifying their porous secondary.
