The Arizona Cardinals are one of the five NFL teams to hire a new coach in the 2023 offseason cycle.
Initially, the Cardinals were interested in hiring Sean Payton but ultimately went in a different direction, hiring Jonathan Gannon.
While there weren’t many details revealed about this situation at first, there have been a few recent developments.
Owner Michael Bidwill said the Saints’ trade demands for the Cardinals to potentially hire Sean Payton led them away from Payton as a candidate.

To hire Payton, the Cardinals would have needed to put together some sort of trade package to get the deal done.
Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill decided that ultimately, that wasn’t in the Cardinals’ best interest.
Many fans of the team have applauded this effort, and have expressed excitement about Gannon’s presence in the building.
The Cardinals finished the 2022 campaign with a record of 4-13 record.
Trading away any sort of draft capital would be detrimental to their success in 2023.
Kyler Murray has been rumored to not be able to play until mid-season, putting the Cardinals in a difficult quarterback situation.
What will Gannon do to help the Cardinals make it through the first half of the season without Murray?
Currently, the other quarterbacks on their roster are Trace McSorley, Colt McCoy, and David Blough.
While each of these players possesses the skills to be a backup NFL quarterback, they aren’t close to Murray’s rushing abilities.
With any luck, Gannon will be able to scrape together a few wins before Murray comes back.
The NFC West should be a difficult division again in 2023, leaving the Cardinals in a potentially difficult position without their franchise quarterback.
