San Francisco 49ers rookie sensation Brock Purdy will undergo surgery on his UCL in his throwing elbow today, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

The Iowa product had to delay this procedure for nearly a month after an MRI revealed there was still a lot of swelling and inflammation around the area, raising some concerns about his future around the fanbase.

An important day for #49ers QB Brock Purdy, his team and its future: Purdy is set for UCL surgery today.

Purdy is now looking at a six-month recovery timetable, which would all but rule him out of training camp and preseason, albeit he could be ready for the start of the regular season on September 7.

Notably, however, Niners GM John Lynch praised the medical staff’s decision to postpone the procedure and wait until it was fully safe to get him under the knife, as this could have lifelong implications for the young quarterback.

For most quarterbacks, the first three months of recovery are all about getting the inflammation down and letting the body settle in.

Then, he could spend the next three months slowly working his way back into playing form, throwing, and doing some drills.

As of now, the Niners haven’t expressed a major interest in pursuing any other potential QB.

Trey Lance will be back to full strength after missing most of his sophomore season with a right ankle injury, so he’s projected to be the starter and take all the first-team reps while Purdy is in recovery.

Needless to say, this raises plenty of questions about who’s going to take over once they’re both healthy, as Purdy was way more impressive than Lance in the time he was behind center.
