The NFL QB market is reaching shocking new heights.
Daniel Jones got the New York Giants to pay him $40 million dollars after throwing for 15 touchdowns and five picks in his best season since he made it to the league.
Patrick Mahomes’ deal seemed like a lot — even for him — when the Kansas City Chiefs signed him, but now it seems like the ultimate bargain.
Jones’ contract now raises the bar drastically, and with guys like Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts waiting in line, it’s crazy to wonder how much money they could — and should — get now.
With that in mind, former Philadelphia Eagles executive Joe Banner recently opened up about Hurts’ impending contract and how he should approach the situation.
Per Banner, Hurts should play the waiting game until some of his colleagues already sign their contracts and push for a short-term deal rather than a long-term contract.
Why?
Well, because the salary cap will continue to be on the rise, and he could be looking at an even bigger haul by signing a couple of three-year deals rather than a five-year contract right away.
“I think this is the most interesting contract of all the ones out there,” Banner said on The Rich Eisen Show. “The longer the deal, the better it is for the team. If he does a three-year deal, the cap will go up $100 million between now and then; that’s almost 50%. A guy making $50 million now is gonna be making 75 to $80 million.”

That’s an interesting take and one that makes perfect sense.
If $40 million gets you a mid-to-low tier QB now, a true MVP candidate like Hurts should be worth at least $60 million, which he won’t get right now.
Hurts has stated that he’s in no rush to get a deal done, so we’ll have to wait and see how this situation unfolds.
