For years, Russell Wilson was the heart and soul of the Seattle Seahawks.
There was a bit of an ongoing debate on whether the team should keep Pete Carroll or him, as the HC seemed slightly outdated every now and then.
It became evident that they didn’t see eye to eye on multiple subjects, and it seemed like Carroll never fully trusted Wilson.
Fans wanted to ‘Let Russ cook,’ yet he wasn’t even allowed to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage despite being a well-known veteran and perennial MVP candidate.
Now, a report by The Athletic states that Wilson’s frustration led him to try and get both Carroll and GM John Schneider fired before the start of last season.
NEWS: In February 2022, Russell Wilson asked Seahawks ownership to fire both GM John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll, league sources tell The Athletic.
Wilson had a preferred replacement in mind: Sean Payton.

As we know by now, the team wound up siding with the GM and head coach, and they traded Wilson away to the Denver Broncos.
Needless to say, the news wasn’t exactly shocking, yet several fans had a lot to say about it.
Sounds like Russ should be playing in the NBA. @minakimes #NFL #Seahawks #Broncos

All this just, Sean Payton and all just to still hold the ball for 18 seconds and not be able to find the open guy

Sounding like another PR job to try and save Wilson’s image

Notably, the story also points out that Wilson wanted the Seahawks to pursue Sean Payton to replace Carroll.
It took him a year, but his wish of playing for Payton has finally come true, as he was hired to replace Nathaniel Hackett in Denver after one of the most disastrous seasons one could possibly remember.
Moreover, siding with Carroll proved to be the right move by Seahawks’ ownership, as they got a massive trade package in return, and still made the playoffs last season with Geno Smith behind center.
