Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos were perhaps the biggest disappointment in the NFL last season.
Nathaniel Hackett looked to be in way over his head and was not prepared to be a head coach, even struggling with basic decision-making and clock management.
But even when given every weapon to succeed, Wilson also left a lot to be desired, making avoidable and unlikely mistakes and holding the team back more often than not.
Needless to say, that prompted countless mockery and criticism around the league and on social media.
Even some former teammates started taking shots at Russ, making us all think that he wasn’t as popular in the locker room as we always thought he was.
However, there might be something going on with Russ that we weren’t aware of.
According to former NFL QB Ryan Leaf, he could have been struggling mentally and emotionally after losing one of his closest friends and coaches.
Leaf talked about Trevor Moawad, a specialist in the field of mental health and positive thinking, who passed away from a brain tumor in 2021.
He revealed that Russ had been working with Moawad since he was getting ready to declare for the NFL Draft and that he was one of the closest people to him:
“This man had been increasingly important to Russell Wilson,” Leaf said. “They were partners, and I don’t think enough people talked about it last year. This was the first season that he didn’t have Trevor. I tell people all the time, when you walk into a facility to train your body you get a trainer. You need a trainer to exercise the biggest muscle in your body, and that is the brain.”
Here’s some insight into the Russell Wilson season last year that I don’t think enough @Broncos fans or fans in general really knew about. Miss you @TrevorMoawad so, so much!!@StraightLinePod @PointsBetUSA pic.twitter.com/fJKxCi36u7

Needless to say, such a major loss could most definitely have a toll on Wilson as a person and an athlete.
That’s why we should never rush to judge someone, regardless of how much money he makes or how famous he is.
