NFL insider Ian Rapoport broke the news of New England Patriots defender Jonathan Jones agreeing on a two-year deal to return to the team.

He’s coming off a solid campaign with the Patriots, making 16 starts as the team’s CB1 and logging a team-best four interceptions.

The 5-foot-10 specimen has been with the Patriots since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2016, making 101 appearances (43 starts) for Bill Belichick’s team.

The Auburn product stepped up big time once J.C. Jackson left to join the Los Angeles Chargers last season, moving from the slot and making a smooth transition in that position.

He made history last season by becoming just the fifth player to record a blocked punt and a pick-six in the same game, excelling against the Indianapolis Colts.

Bill Belichick has been quite vocal in his support of Jones, praising him for climbing his way up from the special teams all the way to the DB unit, even playing as a safety from time to time.

And with star Devin McCourty announcing that he’s walking away from the game, the Patriots were in desperate need of holding on to one of their best players for the future, especially one that could slide into his role with ease right away.

The Patriots struggled to put up points on the scoreboard for most of the last season but their defense was stout and dominant as per usual.

And that’s not likely to change for as long as they have someone like Jones out there.
