The Washington Commanders are already making moves to their roster before the start of free agency.

The most recent was the release of cornerback Bobby McCain.

Washington needed to make this move because it frees up $4.42 million in cap space.

Commanders are releasing starting slot cornerback/safety Bobby McCain, per source. Commanders have young talent in the secondary, McCain was the odd man out and the team will save $4.42 million agains the cap.

Also, the Commanders are looking towards the future, and McCain was not in their long-term plans.

Even though this was a smaller move, teams will do whatever is necessary to get under the salary cap before the new league year.

This moves gives the Commanders around $11 million in cap space heading into next year.

But, there are still a few moves they can make to give themselves even more space.

It will be interesting to see what the Commanders look to do in free agency.

There is no question that they should be in the market for a new quarterback.

They tried to give the job to Carson Wentz last season, and that was a disaster.

Now it is time for them to find their franchise quarterback.

One name that is available right now is Derek Carr, but there has not been any mutual interest between the two as of now.

It seems more than likely that the Commanders will let Sam Howell start the year, and see if he can turn into anything.

They are not picking high enough in the draft to find a future star, and it seems like all the quarterbacks available will go elsewhere.

Ultimately, the Commanders need to make some changes this offseason if they want to be respectable in 2023.
