The Broncos Made An Interesting Choice With New QB Coach

Coming off a terrible 5-12 season, the Denver Broncos are focused on the immediate future as they start to assemble new head coach Sean Payton’s staff.

On Thursday, Adam Schefter reported that they had hired Davis Webb to be their new quarterbacks coach.

It is a very interesting choice, as Webb has spent the last two seasons as a QB himself, albeit a backup QB.

NFL veteran QB Davis Webb, who spent last season backing up Daniel Jones, is being hired as the Broncos’ QB coach, per sources. The 28-year-old Webb now will be coaching the 34-year-old Russell Wilson in his first NFL coaching job.

Webb played the 2022 season with the New York Giants, where he was Daniel Jones’ backup, and he started one game in Week 18.

Prior to that, he was a backup with the Buffalo Bills behind Josh Allen, and he spent some time on the practice squad of the Bills and New York Jets.

In college, Webb had a very strong senior season at the University of California, Berkeley, where he had transferred to from Texas Tech University, as he put up 4,295 passing yards and 37 passing touchdowns.

In Denver, he will be tasked with trying to help Russell Wilson rediscover his old form after a season in which he looked over the hill.

After 10 outstanding seasons with the Seattle Seahawks in which he earned nine Pro Bowl nods and won a Super Bowl, he completed only 60.5 percent of his passes and connected on just 16 touchdown passes while posting an 84.4 passer rating, all of which were career lows.

The Broncos’ chances of making the playoffs for the first time since 2015, let alone being a legitimate Super Bowl contender, will all ride on Wilson and how spry he looks on a consistent basis.
