Steelers Backup QB Won’t Rule Out A Return In Free Agency

The Pittsburgh Steelers have found themselves in a quarterback conundrum after Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement.

Roethlisberger was the Steelers’ quarterback for 18 years, providing stability to the franchise for nearly two decades.

While the Steelers did draft Kenny Pickett in 2022, the team is still making sure that they have a solid backup plan in place.

Mason Rudolph has been one of the Steelers’ backup options and is well-liked within the organization.

Mitchell Trubisky was the Steelers’ primary backup last season and started in six games as well.

Trubisky’s future with the Steelers is unknown, which could leave the door open for Rudolph to return to the team as a backup option, should Trubisky take his talents elsewhere.

In his career with the Steelers, Rudolph has started 17 total games, in which the Steelers have a 9-7-1 record.

In these 17 games, Rudolph has thrown for an average of 139.2 yards, had an average passer rating of 80.9, and had an average completion percentage of 61.5.

While Rudolph hasn’t necessarily set the world on fire in any of his games, he has played well enough to keep the Steelers in games, and has a positive winning percentage as a result.

If he doesn’t garner attention from other teams, Rudolph could turn into the Steelers’ primary backup and experience a fair amount of playing time if Pickett struggles.

Pickett played college football for the University of Pittsburgh, so he too is well-liked by Steelers fans.

He should get a fair shot to impress Steelers fans this season, but it’s always important to have a backup plan in place.
