NFL Insider Details How Geno Smith’s Contract Was Done

The Seattle Seahawks caught multiple strays last season because of their seemingly-weak QB room.

More than that, they thought Pete Carroll was crazy when they chose Geno Smith to be his starter over Drew Lock, who was younger and with more apparent upside.

Smith responded by having the best season of his career and playing like an MVP candidate for the first half of the campaign, and it became evident that he had Carroll’s full trust since day one.

That’s why his continuity in Seattle was never put into question.

If anything, it was a matter of whether they would place him under the franchise tag, or if they would be able to strike a long-term deal.

Fortunately for both parties, they chose to do the latter, and it was a major win-win situation, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

The Seahawks’ proposal in Indy to Geno Smith’s camp was $75 million over 3 years, with the first year guaranteed. So they negotiated considerable upside and more guarantees into the deal, and it got done.

Smart for Smith’s camp to do it. Market for QBs next week could be soft.

Apparently, the Seahawks kind of low-balled Geno with their initial offer at the NFL Scouting Combine, but they were diligent enough to work a deal out once his camp asked them for more.

This kind of attitude toward a franchise player can go to great lengths in negotiations, so it’s not much of a surprise to see that they were able to strike a deal in little-to-no time.

The Seahawks are far ahead of what most people expected in terms of their rebuild, and the NFC West might be up for grabs, depending on the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback situation.

So, it was a good thing that Smith didn’t write back to those who wrote him off.
