The Washington Commanders made two impactful moves on Monday.
The first was the release of cornerback Bobby McCain, which freed up about $4 million in cap space.
Next, the Commanders made a move that everyone had to see coming.
That was the release of quarterback Carson Wentz.

After giving Wentz the starting job last year, the Commanders hoped to revive his career.
But, that was not the case.
Wentz was terrible in Washington, and it resulted in him getting replaced as the starter during the season.
Last season, Wentz started seven games for the Commanders.
He threw for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Washington was 2-5 in the games started by Wentz.
Wow! went from hero in Philadelphia to possibly out of the league. Quick turn of fortune.

This was a move the Commanders had to make because Wentz was not the long-term option.
But, one fan base thinks their team could resurrect Wentz’s career.
Just throwing this out there. Kyle would fix him. #49ers purdy is our franchise I want that. But Carson could be a great backup

Also, releasing him saved them a little over $26 million in cap space.
In total, they have freed up over $30 million in space today.
But, what Washington decides to do with that money will be crucial.
They have star defensive lineman Da’Ron Payne needing a new contract.
So, re-signing him should be one of their top priorities.
Also, what the Commanders plan to do at quarterback will be interesting.
They could always look to draft one, but they are not picking high enough (16th overall) to get one of the top options.
It looks like it will be Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke as the two options in Washington.
Rivera had hoped to tell wentz in person while in Indy. Schedules didn’t synch. Called and told him. But there was no surprise in this move. Sam Howell is the guy for now. https://t.co/91QNRfSZdM

But, even Heinicke is set to be a free agent in March.
So the Commanders should be in the market for an upgrade at quarterback this offseason.
