On Friday, it was announced that Matt Nagy would be promoted to offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, replacing the outgoing Eric Bieniemy, who will be assuming that role for the Washington Commanders.

Some fans may not love the move, but it will be Nagy’s second stint as the team’s offensive coordinator, and Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports pointed out the success Nagy had during his first stint in that capacity.

Matt Nagy’s one season as the sole offensive coordinator with the #Chiefs (shared the job with Brad Childress in 2016).

Alex Smith led the #NFL in passer rating (104.7) and had the lowest INT rate (1.0). The 67.5% was highest of career in KC.

Nagy’s first stint took place in 2017, when Alex Smith was Kansas City’s starting quarterback and Patrick Mahomes was a rookie who barely played.

Under Nagy’s tutelage, Smith had his best season in the NFL, putting up 4,042 passing yards and completing 26 touchdown passes while leading the league with a 104.7 passer rating.

In addition, rookie running back Kareem Hunt led everyone with 1,327 rushing yards, while star wide receiver Tyreek Hill had his first year with over 1,000 yards.

The Chiefs went 10-6 that year and made the playoffs, and their offense drastically improved, as they ranked sixth in points and fifth in total yards.

The following year, Nagy became the head coach of the Chicago Bears, and he helped revitalize the struggling franchise.

With him at the helm of its offense, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky made the Pro Bowl, and went 12-4 while making the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Perhaps not much will change offensively for a Chiefs team that was tops in points and total yards this season.

They do have to re-sign wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster, who will be a free agent, but as long as they do, they should still be a front-running favorite with the best QB in football running the show.
