The Kansas City Chiefs defense took a massive leap forward in 2022, largely due to their defensive line.

During the regular season, the Chiefs defense had the second-most total sacks in the league.

This was second to the Philadelphia Eagles, their Super Bowl opponent.

While they had many key team members that added to their success, Chris Jones was the cornerstone.

Jones was one of the finalists for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

He finished the season with 15.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and 44 total tackles.

Due to his dominance, Jones was PFF’s highest-rated interior defender in 2022, breaking Aaron Donald’s eight-year tenure in that position.

Although many have believed that Donald would retire ahead of the 2023 season, he has maintained that he will be returning next year, much to the chagrin of opposing quarterbacks.

Even if Donald does return next year, Jones is in a great position to build on his success again, cementing himself as one of the league’s best defenders.

Thankfully for the Chiefs, Jones is tied to the team for one more season, and, if the team can afford it, will likely be signed to a contract extension.

Jones and Frank Clark continue to be dominant forces on the Chiefs’ defensive line.

They are joined by a young group of cornerbacks and safeties that will only look to improve next year.

As long as Patrick Mahomes can continue his brilliance on the offensive side of the ball, the defense will continue to be put in a great position for success.
