Chris Broussard Discusses Derek Carr In A Weak NFC

The New Orleans Saints and their fans got a big shot of adrenaline and hope on Monday when it was announced that the team had agreed to sign free agent quarterback Derek Carr, formerly of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Carr may not be an elite QB, but he represents a major upgrade, at least in terms of ability, over Jameis Winston, who was benched early in the 2022 season for Andy Dalton.

The Saints went just 7-10 last season, but now they should have a real shot at making the playoffs, especially given how frightfully weak the NFC South is.

In fact, analyst Chris Broussard implied they could become as good as anyone else in the NFC, other than the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, both of whom appeared in the NFC Championship Game weeks ago.

“The Saints have weapons on offense, they’ve got a good defense, and a weak division. I wouldn’t put them with the 49ers and Eagles, but why can’t they be as good as anyone in the NFC?”

Broussard pointed out the weapons New Orleans has, which includes running back Alvin Kamara, who is just a year removed from five straight Pro Bowl nods, and wide receiver Chris Olave, who was second in the Offensive Rookie of the Year balloting.

In addition, there is wideout Michael Thomas, who has missed much of the last three years with injuries but put up an NFL-high 1,725 yards in his last full season.

Broussard also said that Carr will have the benefit of a strong passing defense that ranked ninth in points allowed, third in passing touchdowns allowed, and second in passing yards given up.

New Orleans hasn’t made the playoffs since 2020, which was Drew Brees’ last season in the NFL before he announced his retirement.
