When the San Francisco 49ers traded for star running back Christian McCaffrey in October, they revived a season that looked like it was going downhill fast.
McCaffrey resuscitated what was then a lackluster offense and made it into one of the NFL’s best over the second half of the season.
Including the playoffs, he played a total of 14 games for the 49ers this season, and he put up some impressive numbers, which opens up the possibility of him breaking some franchise records in 2023.
Christian McCaffrey’s numbers with the #49ers last season (playoffs included):
• 1,543 total yards
• 14 touchdowns (including his TD pass)
• 64 catches
• 16 plays of 20+ yards

The last time they had a running back who was this dynamic was about a decade ago when Frank Gore was the main man in their backfield.
However, Gore was not the dual-threat tailback that McCaffrey is, as he wasn’t much of a threat in the passing game.
It was just three years ago that McCaffrey had 1,387 rushing yards and 1,005 receiving yards in the same season, as well as 19 total touchdowns from scrimmage.
That made him only the third player in NFL history to record 1,000 receiving and rushing yards in the same year.
One of the other two to accomplish that feat was Roger Craig, the former 49ers running back during their dynasty years in the 1980s.
McCaffrey has become something of a security blanket for quarterback Brock Purdy in the passing game, so the possibility of attaining that feat once again could be there for him.
However, the fact that San Francisco also boasts three outstanding receivers in Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and tight end George Kittle will likely make that difficult for McCaffrey.
