Chargers GM Stayed True To His Word

The Los Angeles Chargers appear to be holding onto their top two wide-receiving weapons for the 2023 season.

Keenan Allen was rumored to be a cap causality, given the salary cap hit that he commands.

However, the team has recently announced that they have restructured both Allen and Mike Williams’ contracts, per Field Yates of ESPN.

Chargers GM Tom Telesco had previously made it very clear he was not trading Keenan Allen. This restructure is another reminder of that.

Allen and Williams are under contract through 2024. Their new 2024 cap numbers:

Allen: $34.7175M
Williams: $32.46M https://t.co/sELem3SWsf

As Yates points out, Tom Telesco had been on the record saying that he would not be trading Allen, and that appears to be the case.

While this is beneficial to the team as a whole, it is incredible news for Justin Herbert.

Herbert will be entering his fourth NFL season in 2023 and will look for continued growth with these veteran receivers.

The Chargers made the playoffs in 2022, the first time in Herbert’s three-year career

With Allen and Williams, along with Austin Ekeler as his weapons, Herbert should have plenty of tools at his disposal.

However, the Chargers should have their work cut out for them again next season, given that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are still in their division.

The Chiefs have won the AFC West for seven-straight seasons, something the Chargers are itching to achieve under Herbert.

Even after a disappointing season in 2022, the Denver Broncos have a new coach and should have a better chance to compete for the division this year as well.

Will the Chargers’ offense be enough to overpower these AFC juggernauts?
