The New Orleans Saints have a new quarterback in Derek Carr, who signed a four-year deal with them recently.
Their fans are feeling the type of optimism they haven’t felt since before the retirement of Drew Brees, as it looks like the team will be the best in the NFC South, perhaps by a mile.
But Fox Sports 1 personality Nick Wright feels the Saints made a big mistake by bringing in Carr because of their salary cap situation, which, as he explains, could cause them to get rid of at least one core player in the near future.
“Yes, Derek Carr is the best QB in the division — I understand that. However, the Saints can’t win a Super Bowl right now & they’re ensuring that they stay far away from being able to win one.”

Wright pointed out the amount of “dead money” New Orleans has and said it would’ve been better for the team to clear out some salary cap space and start over anew.
As it stands, it has a respectable roster, between star running back Alvin Kamara, standout rookie wide receiver Chris Olave and oft-injured wideout Michael Thomas.
Thomas has missed most of the last three seasons, but if he is healthy, the Saints hope he can return to putting up over 1,100 receiving yards, which he did in each of his first four seasons.
As recently as 2019, he led the NFL with 1,725 receiving yards and was named the Offensive Player of the Year.
But for a franchise and a fan base that was spoiled by the Brees era and its 2009 Super Bowl championship, simply making the playoffs and winning a game or two won’t be good enough.
Only time will tell whether Wright ends up being right about New Orleans’ financial situation with Carr on board.
