The Carolina Panthers are bringing a somewhat familiar face to their new coaching staff.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, they’ve now hired Bert Watts to serve as their new Safeties coach, and he also happened to be the uncle of Panther’s TE Tommy Tremble.

Still, those family ties may have had nothing to do with the hiring.

Instead, it was his solid job with the Denver Broncos, where he worked as an outside linebackers coach last season.

Notably, this is now the third defensive assistant that new Panthers’ Defensive Coordinator Ejiro Evero has stolen from his former workplace, joining the likes of linebackers coach Peter Hansen and defensive assistant Dom Capers.

Watts had already worked for the Broncos nearly a decade ago and was serving as outside linebackers coach and special team coordinator at Auburn.

He has vast experience at the collegiate level, also working at the University of Memphis, Fresno State University, and the University of California-Davis.

The Panthers brought in former Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Frank Reich to revamp the organization after Matt Rhule’s failed tenure.

Needless to say, he’s wasted no time in bringing in some of the most prominent names in the industry to join his coaching staff, especially when it comes to defense.

The NFC South will be wide-open now that Tom Brady has retired, and the Panthers have no plans of sleeping on their laurels, as they know they have a core that’s good enough to make the playoffs, even despite their shaky quarterback situation.
