The Saints Have Restructured A Contract For A Key Player

The New Orleans Saints are in a bit of a tough spot, salary cap-wise.

They need to start making some moves to bring in more reinforcements and compete in perhaps the softest division in football.

That’s why they continue to try and restructure some of their players’ contracts, with veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu as the latest example of that trend.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Saints have now cleared nearly $4.7 million in 2023 salary cap space, although they’re still roughly $30 million over the cap.

It’s not a secret that the Saints are more than interested in signing Derek Carr to be their next QB, so they need to keep making moves to have enough space to give the former Las Vegas Raiders the kind of contract he’s hoping for.

Nonetheless, what seemed like a done deal a couple of weeks ago is now in jeopardy, as they’ll face some steep competition for his services.

Carr just had a very positive visit with the New York Jets, and the team is reportedly ready to make him their top priority if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t pursue a trade.

Moreover, the Indianapolis Colts are also reportedly set to arrange a meeting with the Fresno State product, who might as well be the most sought-after player in the offseason.

The Saints have a strong defense and some nice weapons in their offense, and their division is less than competitive right now.

So, expect them to continue making this kind of move in the next couple of weeks.
